Geneva -- Mar 04, 2008 -- At the 78th International Motor Show in Geneva a further special edition of the successful smart fortwo is celebrating its world premiere. The "edition limited two" will be produced as a limited series of 2000 vehicles and is characterised by exclusive colouring and a high quality mix of materials - on both the outside and the inside.

In addition, smart is presenting three further current variants of the unique two-seater: thanks to an innovative start/stop function, the smart fortwo micro hybrid drive (mhd) consumes 8 percent less fuel on average (NEDC), greatly reducing CO2 emissions. The smart fortwo cdi uses state-of-the-art common rail direct injection to achieve exemplary consumption figures.

 

With average consumption of 3.3 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC) and CO2 emissions of just 88 grams per kilometre it has the lowest standard consumption worldwide, earning it the title "CO2 champion" amongst series production cars. The smart fortwo BRABUS is a particularly powerful and sporty model and is also available as the further upgraded BRABUS Xclusive.

 

The "edition limited two" is guaranteed to turn heads thanks to its eye-catching appearance. The interior features clear lines and fine details. Elegant cognac brown leather with a two-tone contrasting seam sets the tone here and gives it a personal note. From the heated leather seats, interior door trim, 3-spoke leather sports steering wheel with paddle gearshift to the leather gear knob and the leather-trimmed floor mats – everything appears in a warm brown tone. Additional matt silver highlights on the speedometer, cockpit clock, rev counter and steering wheel provide a harmonious contrast and round off the modern character. In this way, the style of the smart fortwo is maintained and developed in impressive fashion.

 

A highlight of the exterior is the special "light blue metallic" finish that was created especially for the “edition limited two”. The paintwork shimmers with silver-beige nuances depending on the prevailing light conditions. The clear silver of the tridion safety cell sets off the panelling to perfection. And the 6-spoke alloy wheels with wide tyres demonstrate that elegance and dynamism are not mutually exclusive.

 

The new edition is available as a coupé and a cabriolet and is based on the "passion" equipment variant. Among other things it comes with the automatic softouch gear mode, electric windows, air conditioning with automatic temperature control, a dust and pollen filter and a panoramic roof with sunblind on the coupé. In addition, the standard equipment of the "edition limited two" includes dashboard instruments and the radio 9. Electric power steering, a lockable glove compartment, the smart sound system with five high-quality loudspeakers and the smart MP3 interface are available on request as optional equipment.

 

The two-seater is powered by a 52 kW/71 bhp petrol engine in combination with automated 5-speed transmission and an automatic gear programme which also allows manual gear shifting if desired.

The smart fortwo micro hybrid drive (mhd) rated at 52 kW/71bhp is a particularly economical variant. This is thanks to a new sophisticated start/stop function that automatically shuts down the engine when fuel would otherwise be unnecessarily consumed – for example in stop and go traffic. The principle is simple and fully automatic: when the vehicle approaches red traffic lights, for example, the micro hybrid drive switches off the engine as soon the car falls below a speed of 8 km/h and the brake pedal is pressed. The engine starts again as soon as the driver releases the brake pedal. This guarantees an immediate response. If required, the start/stop function can be deactivated at any time with a switch on the centre console.

 

Together with the automated manual transmission that is a standard feature, the new start/stop technology guarantees comfortable and straightforward driving with reduced fuel consumption. The new technology pays off - studies have shown that in everyday traffic vehicles come to a stop on average every 1.3 kilometres.

 

In conjunction with slightly modified gear ratios, the start/stop system leads to a fuel saving of approximately 8 percent in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC combined). The standard consumption is reduced by approximately 0.4 litres – from 4.7 litres to around 4.3 litres per 100 kilometres. There is also a corres-ponding reduction to the average CO2 emissions from 112 grams to approx. 103 grams per kilometre. Depending on the traffic situation, much higher fuel savings of up to 19 percent are possible - for example in heavy slow traffic.

 

At the heart of the start/stop system is a belt-driven starter generator. This replaces and does the work of both the conventional starter and the alternator. The belt-driven starter generator supplies the vehicle's electrical system with power and it also starts the petrol engine particularly quickly in its second function as a starter.

 

Control unit with integrated power electronics

 

A control unit that is installed behind the battery recess controls the function of the start/stop system. Integrated power electronics control the power of both the starter and the generator. An AGM battery stores the energy for the on-board electrics. Its physical properties make it more resistant to varying loaded and unloaded conditions (cycle resistant) than conventional lead-acid batteries with sulphuric acid electrolyte.

 

smart fortwo cdi: The CO2 champion - a masterpiece of engine development

 

With the development of the direct-injection diesel engine, smart has produced

 

a masterpiece of engine development that earns the smart fortwo cdi the distinction of the world's most economical production car with combustion drive. The 33 kW/45 bhp two-door car consumes just 3.3 litres (NEDC) per 100 kilometres on average which means that it can travel approximately 1000 kilometres without refuelling. Emitting just 88 grams of CO2 per kilometre, the smart fortwo diesel is the world champion in low CO2 emissions amongst series production cars.

 

High-tech fuel injection

 

State-of-the-art common-rail direct injection provides for a combustion process that is even more efficient than that of the well-proven cdi engine from the predecessor model. High injection pressure of up to 1600 bar (previously 1350 bar) is built up, even at low revs, and the fuel is injected into the combustion chambers with new seven-hole injectors. The power and torque have each improved by 10 percent. At the same time, fuel consumption is reduced by 13 percent. Depending on the driving situation and engine load, up to 60 percent of the previously cooled exhaust gases are returned to the combustion chambers.

 

Like the CDI engines of its sister brand Mercedes-Benz, fuel injection in the smart fortwo cdi is carried out in two phases: a few milliseconds before the main injection a small quantity of diesel is injected into the combustion chambers where it ignites and preheats the cylinders. This results in a noticeably quieter combustion noise level than an engine without this pilot injection. The electronic "brain" of the cdi engine - a high-performance micro-computer that controls the whole engine system - calculates how much fuel is needed and the interval at which pilot injection and main injection take place.

 

The quick response of the cdi engine is first and foremost thanks to the compact turbocharger that is housed in the exhaust manifold. Its compressor wheel has a diameter of just 33 millimetres, yet it rotates at up to 280,000 rpm and builds up maximum charge pressure of approximately 1200 millibars even at an engine speed of 1800 rpm. This enables the three-cylinder engine to develop impressive torque, even at low revs: 85 Newton metres are available even from 1500 rpm - more than three quarters of the maximum torque. This torque curve plays an important part in the fun behind the wheel that drivers experience with every kilometre driven in a smart fortwo cdi. The new smart fortwo cdi thus offers a combination of agility, economy and environmental compatibility that is unique in this class.

The sporty character of the smart fortwo BRABUS is apparent at first glance. For example, it comes with bright-finish "Monoblock VI" alloy wheels with wide tyres measuring 175/50 R 16 at the front and 225/35 R 17 at the rear, a sports exhaust system with centrally positioned stainless steel tailpipes and a body that has been lowered by ten millimetres. In the interior, cockpit instruments with specially designed dials, BRABUS stainless steel sports pedals and a three-spoke leather steering wheel with shift paddles underline the exclusiveness of this model. The transmission and suspension also have a sporty setup.

 

The smart fortwo BRABUS Xclusive lives up to its name with additional equipment details such as projection headlamps with titanium coloured surrounds, a front spoiler with enlarged air inlets, striking side skirts and a rear apron painted in the colour of the body.The seats are covered with fine leather and are heated. The leather-effect instrument panel features aluminium-look trim components.

 

Three-cylinder engine with turbo power: 72 kW/98 bhp and 140 Newton metres of torque

 

The turbo engine that has been improved in numerous details is the heart of the smart fortwo BRABUS and BRABUS Xclusive. From a capacity of one litre the three-cylinder engine now develops 72 kW/98 bhp at 5500 rpm and lends the 780 kilogram (coupé) two-seater remarkable agility. The weight/power ratio is just 7.8 kg/bhp – 24 percent lower than that of the predecessor.

 

The turbo engine develops maximum torque of 140 Newton metres at 3500 rpm. The BRABUS variants of the smart fortwo sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 155 km/h. With combined fuel consumption of just 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres the new smart fortwo BRABUS and BRABUS Xclusive are some of the most economical cars in their size and power category. Carbon dioxide emissions stand at just 124 grams per kilometre.

Daimler's Mercedes Sales Rise 18% on C-Class, Smart

March 4 (Bloomberg) -- Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz Cars division, the world's second-largest maker of luxury vehicles, said sales rose 18 percent last month on demand for new versions of the C-Class sedan and Smart microcar.

 

February deliveries increased to 96,600 cars and sport- utility vehicles from 82,000 a year earlier, Stuttgart, Germany- based Daimler said in a statement today. Deliveries by the Mercedes-Benz brand gained 13 percent to 87,800 vehicles, while sales at the Smart brand more than doubled to 8,800 cars.

 

Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche aims to raise the division's earnings as a proportion of sales to at least 10 percent by 2010, rivaling competitor Bayerische Motoren Werke AG in profitability. The Mercedes-Benz brand has eliminated more than 9,000 assembly-line jobs and is reducing the number of parts in models such as the S-Class, its largest sedan.

 

`` The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class enjoyed continued success in February,'' with the model posting ``very strong sales growth in all regions,'' the company said.

 

Daimler rose as much as 31 cents, or 0.6 percent, to 55.91 euros in German trading and was up 0.1 percent as of 9:32 a.m. The stock has declined 16 percent this year.

 

Deliveries of the C-Class sedan and station wagon more than doubled to 29,000 vehicles from 13,700. Sales of the smaller A- Class and B-Class models increased 8 percent to 21,600 units.

 

U.S., German Sales

 

Mercedes-Benz brand sales in the U.S. rose 7 percent to a record 18,600 units, driven by the C-Class sedan, the company said. In Germany, sales advanced 22 percent to 23,100 vehicles. In western Europe excluding Germany, deliveries gained 12 percent to 26,900 vehicles, a record.

 

The Mercedes-Benz Cars division's sales in western Europe rose 22 percent to 57,100 vehicles in February, with the German market recording a 24 percent jump to 25,000. Sales in the U.S. increased 14 percent to 19,700, while deliveries in the Asia- Pacific region advanced 8.5 percent to 11,400. Deliveries in Japan fell 5.6 percent.

Is leather the "ultimate recycled material?" PETA thinks not

Last month, Peta sent a letter to David Schembri, president of Smart USA, informing him that his company is contradicting itself if it considers its Smart Passion models to be environmentally friendly. The problem is not the fuel mileage or emissions, but the fact that the vehicle includes leather seats. According to PETA, leather is harmful to the environment, but more importantly to them, it requires killing cows. According to PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk, "Smart can't have it both ways: touting its cars as eco-friendly and then plastering them with toxic and Earth-degrading leather."

 

Detroit News bloggers have chimed in regarding this issue, with Eric Morath quoting Rodney Hammond, vice president and general manager at Seton Co, as saying, "When you think about it, leather is the ultimate recycled material. You don't grow cows for the skin, you do it for the beef or the dairy. We take what would otherwise be waste and turn it into a beautiful, luxurious product." Hammond's company is an automotive supplier that makes leather interiors. Manny Lopez considers leather "green and practical," while Scott Burgess suggests switching to hemp and reminds us that some automakers have begun using bio-fabrics. In any case, leather interiors are not likely to go anywhere soon, but perhaps the industry could take a deeper look at the chromium-free tanning process that Lincoln was touting on their MKR concept.

Everywhere you go, you are bombarded by advertisements. It's true when you're watching TV, surfing the internet and even while you're driving. We've all gotten used to seeing billboards on the side of the road, and nobody thinks twice about hearing commercials on the radio - some even pay extra to avoid them. So, how would you feel about being behind the wheel of a rolling advertisement? O2 Media is betting that you'll go for the deal since it would end up costing you less than $8 per day, not including gas, to drive a smart fourtwo all around Helsinki, Finland. There are a few conditions, though. You need to drive at least 18 miles in a 24 hour period and you can't pick what you're advertising. The car could be festooned with advertisements for something you don't care for, but the company is currently not accepting political ads. If you're interested, you get up to 62 miles (100 kilometers) per day, so get out and enjoy the scenery.

We've got a brand new episode of Car Tech for you. No, it's nothing as fast as the Jaguar XKR, but it's potentially just as exciting. Meet the Smart ED, an electric car that's set to revolutionise -- or at the very least shake up -- the way people get around.

 

It's just like an ordinary Smart ForTwo: quirky-looking, easy to park and nimble, but with a couple of crucial differences. The Smart ED -- yes, it's ED, not EV -- doesn't use any petrol and doesn't emit any nasty, toxic poison into the atmosphere. You simply charge it up over the mains, hop in and off you go. You can even charge it for free at any of the 22 electric car charging points scattered around London. Aside from road tax and minimal insurance costs, you can pretty much drive this thing around for free. It's just like the G-Wiz -- except perhaps less likely to blow up.

 

It has other benefits, too. It's exempt from London's congestion charge so you can avoid the Ј8 per day tax imposed by our good mayor, potentially saving yourself around Ј2,000 per year. You can also park it for free or for a reduced rate in some nominated car parks. Plus, it runs extremely quietly so you can creep up on kids as they play football in the streets. Or not.

 

We were pretty surprised by how much fun it is to drive. It goes from 0-30mph in approximately 15 seconds and has a top speed of around 70mph -- more if you're going down a hill with a trailing wind and a tsunami in your rear-view mirror. In other words, it's well on its way to doing what an ordinary car can do. It's not available to buy just yet, but anyone who fancies a glimpse of the money-saving, pocket-fattening future should definitely watch the video. -Rory Reid

это что же получается, что все Smart Roadster в будущем станут праворульными?! :(

 

Я думаю нет. Производитель не на столько глуп, чтобы ограничиться только рынком Англии..

Я извеняюсь что спрашиваю в этой теме, но есть какая нибуть информация о сроке начало производства нового родстера?

Пока сроки не называли, да и не под брендом смарта он будет, если его и начнут выпускать.

В результате концерн Daimler (марки Mercedes-Benz, Maybach и Smart) имел все шансы записать первый квартал как провальный. "Во всем виноват финансовый кризис, разразившийся в США. Это отражается на наших продажах по обе стороны Атлантики", - заявил Клаус Майер в интервью информагентству DPA.

 

Однако на практике все оказалось не так плохо для мощного концерна. Благодаря резко увеличившимся продажам микромобилей Smart концерн Daimler не только не ушел в минус, а, напротив, имеет шансы побить рекорд продаж прошлого года, составляющий более 1,3 млн автомобилей.

 

Достигнуть этого поможет старт продаж Smart в Америке. Предварительные планы концерна продать 20 тысяч микромобилей в США будут не только выполнены, но и перевыполнены, - уверен Майер. Хорошо покупают Smart и в Европе. Такой ситуации способствуют не только "экологические" настроения, но и высокие цены на автомобильное топливо.

 

Большинство россиян по-прежнему с иронией смотрят на субкомпактные автомобили, считая их неполноценными автомобилями. Хотя практика показывает, что в условиях мегаполиса такие машины дают целый ряд преимуществ: простота парковки и езды по переполненным машинами улицам, экономия расходов на топливо и налоги.

Думаете, что на маленьком Smart ForTwo могут ездить только миниатюрные блондинки? А вот и нет! Оказывается, за рулем этого автомобиля может совершенно спокойно разместиться один из самых больших людей мира баскетболист Шакил О"Нил. Полученные фотографии доказывают, что человек ростом 2 м 16 см может не только забраться, но и даже управлять Smart, длина которого составляет 2,5 м. Правда, есть один нюанс – Шакил выбрал себе не стандартный ForTwo, а версию кабриолет.

Новость, наверное, важная :) Будучи на презентации Купе Е-класса в приватной беседе с неким герром из Штуттгартского маркетинга вытянул из него информацию о том, что таки да, Смарт появится в России официально и едва ли не этой осенью. B)

У Smart появится трехместная модель

В распоряжении британского журнала Autocar оказались первые изображения новой модели Smart, недавно представленные компанией Mercedes-Benz в патентное ведомство. Судя по рисункам, автомобиль получит трехместный салон, чья компоновка напоминает ту, которая использовалась в известном суперкаре McLaren F1 – водитель сидит по центру, а кресла двух пассажиров размещены сзади него.

 

Новый Smart, который, по предварительной информации, получит имя ForThree, будет предлагаться как спортивная альтернатива ForTwo с возможность перевозки трех пассажиров и менее вместительным багажным отсеком. В передней части салона появятся специальные направляющие, которые позволят водительскому креслу перемещаться к дверям, облегчат посадку и выход из машины и упростят доступ к ремням безопасности.

 

Ожидается, что для новинки будет предлагаться гамма новых трехцилиндровых бензиновых и дизельных двигателей Mercedes-Benz объемом от 800 кубических сантиметров до 1,4 литра. Агрегироваться такие моторы станут, вероятно, с семиступенчатой роботизированной коробкой передач с двумя сцеплениями.

 

Ожидается, что трехместный Smart заменит в модельном ряду автомобиль с кузовом "купе", который был снят с производства в 2005 году. В салонах европейских дилеров ForThree появится к 2014 году.

Mercedes-Benz is developing a highly flexible three-seat Smart.

The plans, revealed in a series of patent drawings over several weeks and seen by Autocar, underline Mercedes' determination to build on its limited line-up of dedicated city cars.

Mercedes is reacting to increased competition from Toyota in the form of the iQ and the impending arrival of similar urban-based offerings from premium rivals Audi and BMW.

The new interior draws heavily on that used by McLaren in its mould-breaking F1 supercar, sitting the driver’s seat centrally up front with a pair of passenger seats set further back on either side of the cabin – an arrangement made possible by the retention of the rear-engined platform design used by today’s Smart Fortwo.

Early plans call for the unusual layout to be used in a replacement for the coupe and roadster pairing axed from Smart’s line-up back in 2005, after a run of 43,091 cars.

Merc/renault in Smart tie-up

The low-slung three-seater has been conceived as a sportier alternative to Smart’s upright second-generation Fortwo, with accommodation for up to three, along with limited boot space at the rear.

Nothing’s official at this stage, but Mercedes-Benz insiders contacted by Autocar suggest the new car could take the name 'Forthree' into showrooms by 2014 as part of plans to extend the Smart line-up into a complete range of models by the middle of the next decade.

The three-seat cabin incorporates a number of innovations aimed at solving the inherent problems in such a layout, including the long stretch upon entering and exiting the cabin.

Among them is a swivelling seat base as well as a transverse runner within the floor that allows the driver’s seat to be adjusted out towards the door. Patent application sketches obtained by Autocar also reveal a complex seatbelt arrangement for the driver.

The three-seat interior is housed within a new interpretation of Smart’s existing Tridion steel safety cell, with sturdy longitudinal and transverse members aimed at providing controlled deformation and added crash protection.

Although the patent applications do not make mention of the new car’s proposed mechanical package, Mercedes-Benz is already well advanced on a new line-up of modular three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines ranging in capacity from 800cc through to 1.4 litres.

Also in the pipeline is a new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Both are planned to make an appearance in the third-generation A-class, due out in 2011, before making their way into other Mercedes-Benz models, including those from Smart.
